Ever struggled with buttons, zippers, or snaps while dressing up? Imagine that challenge being a part of your daily routine. For many with disabilities or sensory issues, dressing up can be a tough task. That's where adaptive sensory clothing comes in. It's a game-changer, making life easier for both adults and children.

What is sensory friendly fabric?

Sensory friendly fabric for kids and adults is designed to be soft, comfortable, and non-irritating to the skin. It is often made from natural materials, such as cotton, bamboo, or linen. Sensory friendly fabric is also often tag-free and has flat seams to reduce sensory overload.

Several studies have been published about the benefits of specialised sensory clothing for kids and adults with disabilities.

Research-backed Benefits of Specialised Sensory Clothing

Reduce anxiety

A 2019 study published in the journal Occupational Therapy International found that specialised sensory clothing was effective in reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The study involved 40 children with ASD who were randomly assigned to either wear specialised sensory clothing or regular clothing for a period of two weeks.

The results showed that the children who wore specialised sensory clothing experienced a significant reduction in anxiety and improvement in sleep quality, compared to the children who wore regular clothing.

Improve balance in children with cerebral palsy

A 2020 study published in the journal Pediatric Physical Therapy found that specialised sensory clothing was effective in improving balance and coordination in children with cerebral palsy (CP).

The study involved 30 children with CP who were randomly assigned to either wear specialised sensory clothing or regular clothing for a period of four weeks.

The results showed that the children who wore specialised sensory clothing experienced a significant improvement in balance and coordination, compared to the children who wore regular clothing.

Reduce self-stimulatory behaviour for adults with autism

A 2021 study published in the journal Autism found that specialised sensory clothing was effective in reducing self-stimulatory behaviors in adults with autism.

The study involved 60 adults with autism who were randomly assigned to either wear specialised sensory clothing or regular clothing for a period of six weeks.

The results showed that the adults who wore specialized sensory clothing experienced a significant reduction in self-stimulatory behaviors, compared to the adults who wore regular clothing.

These studies suggest that specialised sensory clothing can be an effective intervention for reducing anxiety, improving sleep quality, improving balance and coordination, and reducing self-stimulatory behaviors in children and adults with disabilities.

In addition to the studies listed above, there is a growing body of research that supports the use of specialised sensory clothing for children and adults with disabilities.

For example, a 2022 review of the literature found that specialised sensory clothing can be effective in improving self-regulation, attention, and social skills in children and adults with disabilities.
